Band History
Brief Band History
the story so far...
1994-Veer Chasm begins as a studio entity consisting of Joel Dalangin, his
voice, a bank of synthesizers, and a foreign instrument to him: the guitar.
The Alluring Crutch is an unreleased album of demos that sets the table
for Veer Chasm.
1995- A self titled EP is released to the public. It consists of early versions
of Corpse, a Memory and the Ghost/Ixion and I/Wounded/and Prone. Underground
radioplay ensues and Veer Chasm is inundated with orders for this obscure
little "tape-that-could."
1996- Pressured from the initial response, Dalangin hunkers down in his studio to craft the album that would become Blade Halo. It takes a bout with xanax, bankruptcy, and the limitations of a non-existent band before the album is released. It's a morass of shoegazer/industrial/goth/noise pop that generates much attention.
1997- Blade Halo is released. Chaos ensues.
1998- Sam "Zxsa" Hammond, an old friend from a previous band, joins the fray by adding his bass playing/live antics to Veer Chasm. Dalangin and Hammond begin playing everywhere imaginable: backyards/clubs/churches. Accompanied by sequenced tracks, they struggle to find the sound they are destined for. Out of this, the ascend EP, comes out later in the year. Ascend captures the band's sense of melody, moodiness, and space only hinted at on Blade Halo.
1999- Veer Chasm continues to perform shows and decides it's time to acquire a drummer. A search goes out.
2000- A colleague of Hammond joins the band and begins the transformation of Veer Chasm from a studio crafted machination into a fire breathing live show. It's during this awkward phase that Dalangin and Hammond finish the recording of The Depth of You. A tersely reactionary album, it is moody and textured, expounding upon the sound of ascend. It's a sharp contrast to Blade Halo's rough edges.
2001- The Depth of You is released. The band begins playing in it's new form.
2002- The band pursues other drummers to fulfill tour obligations including the much vaunted TOM festival in Washington. Sara Pena fills the drum throne. Armed with a load of songs, Dalangin begins work on a new record.
2003- Suffer Cruel Children is the result of the band's energetic live sound. It is a dialog of the things going on in Dalangin's life: good and bad. The album is completed and the band tours behind it with abandon
2004- Joel records the whole of the Minions of Zilon. Many of the lyrical and musical themes are reprised from previous albums. Joel says "I guess it's appropriate since the album marks the ten year anniversary of Veer Chasm." He also adds with a smirk, "if you have been paying attention to our music thus far you'll be able to name all the songs we ripped ourselves off from." Russ Simms fills the drummer spot.
2005-the Minions of Zilon is released and a tour follows. Jim Marshall becomes Veer Chasm's new drummer.
2006- Russ Simms rejoins. Band begins work on new material.
2007- Mercurochrome is released. It is the band's fifth studio album.
2008- Russ Simms leaves band, Veer Chasm explores a new direction...
The story continues.
